Jennie over at Edspire, has read and reviewed our new Maverick Chapter Readers, with a little help from her daughters.
Our brand new range of Chapter Readers are designed to follow straight on from level 10, or the White band of Early Readers. With increased pagination and a more complex language style, these longer texts build children’s reading stamina and help them to prepare for junior fiction titles.
Bea and I have been enjoying these Chapter Readers from @maverick_books I say Bea and I but actually it was Esther who read them first. Esther is 10 years old with severe dyslexia and while she loves books and stories, has amazing comprehension skills, she finds the physical act of reading difficult and tiring. These bite size chapter books are perfect for her. She can read them in one sitting. They are age appropriate. The stories have great openings, they are pacy with twists and turns and the books end with comprehension questions to help steer any discussion after reading. Esther’s favourite was The Trouble With Gnomes which is Enid Blyton esque and has a brilliant cliff hanger in the middle of the story. Bea loves Spooky Scoops. These books are adventure stories with hints of age appropriate horror, science fiction and other genres. These are not the mundane chapter readers that are often served up in school. These would be a wonderful addition to any school reading book collection. They work well as group readers, for independent readers, children with dyslexia and as readalouds for younger children. William with a reading age that is off the scale of the reading tests cannot help listening when these are being read aloud in our home. I often hear him chuckling along. These are high quality reading materials for young children moving from picture books to chapter books. We highly recommend them for home and school.
